The semantic web has become somewhat of a buzz word for what has been labeled web 3.0. But what is it? I found this video very instructive and engaging on the subject and hopefully you will also: http://bit.ly/92dGLh

April 28th, 2010Secure optical media solution in development from Imation & EncryptDisc
March 31st, 2010Imation and ENCRYPTX Corporation are in development on a line of secure optical media. In a recent announcement, the companies state that the CD-R, DVD-R and Blu-ray Discs will use ENCRYPTX’s EncryptDisc AES 256-bit encryption technology on a line of secure, printable optical media products from Imation
“As the global leader in optical media with more than 50 years of experience helping commercial users and government agencies to store and protect their critical data, Imation is excited to announce this important product development and marketing relationship with ENCRYPTX,” said Keith Schwartz, director of strategic growth for Imation’s global commercial business.
“EncryptDisc technology addresses the needs of government, business and medical users who require a highly secure way to transport, share and archive sensitive data on optical media. It is another important offering in Imation’s growing portfolio of secure storage products designed to help our customers more fully protect their critical storage assets and ensure compliance with increasingly stringent security and regulatory requirements.”
“ENCRYPTX is pleased to have partnered with Imation, an industry leader in data storage, to create this highly secure line of optical products with EncryptDisc technology,” added David Duncan, founder and president of ENCRYPTX Corporation. “While today’s users are very familiar with creating and burning CDs and DVDs on computers, this familiarity has increased the possibility of data leaks and unprotected record sharing in corporate and government environments. With EncryptDisc technology’s built-in burning and automatic encryption, organisations have full control over what is being recorded and by whom. Because the encryption used is FIPS 140-2 Level 1 validated, users are assured the content of the disc is in compliance with government encryption standards.”

Breakthrough may lead to 35TB Magnetic Tape
March 24th, 2010IBM researchers announced they have demonstrated a world record in areal data density on linear magnetic tape. These new technologies are estimated to enable cartridge capacities that could hold up to 35 trillion bytes (terabytes) of uncompressed data**. This is about 44 times*** the capacity of today’s IBM LTO Generation 4 cartridge. A capacity of 35 terabytes of data is sufficient to store the text of 35 million books, which would require 248 miles (399 km) of bookshelves.
